We need your art by Amie McNee - Book review

Let me start out by saying: Whether you have always dreamed about wanting to be an artist, doing something in the creative field, or just trying out something new - WE NEED YOUR ART.

Amie’s book is a fantastic read (also great as an audiobook) which explores the doubt, imposter syndrome, but also sheer joy we feel when we create art. With a two-week program she helps you set goals that are meant to be achievable, yet will also keep your creative spark alive and prevent burnout. “We need your art” is about everyone and anyone who has always waited for the right moment to start.

  • When I’m retired I can finally…

  • Once I have reached x, I will finally be happy

  • etc.

I genuinely believe that there is so much worth experiencing beyond our fear of failure. We may often find ourselves wanting something to exist in its ultimately perfect state when we try for the first time, yet fail to realise that sometimes it will take two, three or a hundred fails for something to work out. Nonetheless, without any of those failures, we would have never succeeded. This may be true for any new skill you are learning, a foreign language you are trying to speak, a choreography you are trying to remember, and so much more.

Aime McNee also highlights her own struggles she had had during the process of writing this book. Her way of writing feels relatable on many levels and leaves you feeling like you have just spent some time talking to an old friend. The book is littered with passages that you would want to print out so you will never forget.

We need your art was a truly enjoyable book to listen to in my case. It had everything from humour to honesty, vulnerability, and inspiration.

It is time for you to take yourself and your art seriously. You are an artist.

We need your art.

Stay curious & BE BOLD,
Soso
