How I create seamless Instragram carousels

“Mama’s recipes” on my profile @s0ritta on Instagram

Before you start

  • Instagram is currently using a 4:5 format, allowing vertical posts to stand out more

  • in this case, keep the format 1080 px x 1350 px in mind

you will need

  • phone/notebook/PC with access to the internet

  • free Canva account (this particular post was created with free Canva elements exclusively)

  • pictures you have uploaded to Canva

  • http://pinetools.com for splitting up your image to be posted as a carousel post on Instagram

  • an Instagram account

Let’s start

1) Create your canvas

Decide how many slides your carousel post should have. Mind you, you will need at least 2 slides and can post up to 20 slides (photos and videos can be mixed). Once you have decided,

  • open up https://www.canva.com

  • click on “create”

  • click on custom size

  • in this case choose the canvas size 4320 px x 1350 px (will give you 4 slides) and click on “create new design”

2) set grids

You know have a blank Canvas to play with! Let’s set the grids, so you know where one slide will end and where the next one will start.

  • In the top left corner, click on “File” > activate “show rulers and guides” > “add guides”

  • you can now edit and add custom guides, with 4 panels. Make sure the Gap is set to zero

3) Set a background

  • Click on “Elements” on the left navigation bar and search up “paper”

  • Choose a free photo of your preference, add it to your Canvas and set this photo as the wallpaper by right-clicking on the image

4) add elements and text

You are all set to show off your creativity now! :) Add elements to your post such as pictures, text, stickers and co. keep in mind that you can only add non-moving objects to your Canvas. If you would like to add videos to your carousel, you can create another 1080 px x 1350 px canvas

These are elements and keywords I enjoy using in Canva:

  • Graphics: paper, @dgrapx, @oli-and-joh, @booboostudio, @sparklestroke, @sketchify

  • Fonts:

    • CAPSLOCK

      • Donau

      • Metanoia

      • Reborn

    • Handwritten

      • Wonderful Branding

      • Sisterhood

    • Bookish

      • Doulos

      • Forum

      • The Youngest

Once you are happy with your design, save and download the picture as a PNG file.

5) split your image

  • Go to https://pinetools.com

  • Go to “images” > more > click on “split image”

  • Upload your image you just downloaded from Canva

  • On the right side, make sure you choose “Split image horizontally” into as many blocks as you need

  • Split the image and either download the zip folder or all single images

6) upload your post to Instagram!

Ready to share your post with the world? It is time to upload your carousel post to Instagram - you’ve made it! wohoo!
